Ohio University has led the state in the number of students earning Fulbright awards five of the past six years. This year, 59 percent of our applicants earned awards, the best success rate of any U.S. research university.

An investment in Southeast Ohio
A West Virginia bank is giving $1 million to TechGrowth Ohio, a coalition set up to provide operational assistance to technology firms in Southeast Ohio that counts Ohio University among its partners. Experts at the university's Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs connect area entrepreneurs with resources and potential sources of capital through TechGrowth.
 
New compounds kill ovarian cancer cells [Research News]
A new class of compounds called phosphaplatins can effectively kill ovarian, testicular, head and neck cancer cells with potentially less toxicity than conventional drugs, according to a new study published this week in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Vice President for Research Rathindra Bose is the study's lead author.

Tapping OHIO's best ambassadors
About 45 Ohio University students will visit their high schools to share their experiences and answer questions as part of the Visit Your Hometown program during this winter break. The program is run by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

'Truly a man for all seasons'
Professor Emeritus of Theater Seabury Quinn Jr., 82, died Nov. 8 in The Bronx. Quinn taught in the School of Theater from 1968 through 1996. Though his focus was theater history, Quinn loved to act and direct and also headed the school's playwriting program. The school's annual playwrights' festival was established in his honor in 1994.
 
University joins Economic Development Council
Ohio University will play an important role in supporting job creation and increasing the economic health of the Athens community as a new member of the recently created Economic Development Council.

Feedback sought on semester calendar draft
The Quarters to Semesters Transition Team is requesting universitywide feedback on a draft 2012-13 academic year calendar by the start of winter quarter Jan. 5. The team has been meeting weekly since September in an effort to map out timelines and guiding principles related to the conversion. It expects to complete its work by the end of winter quarter.
 
Financing of IT, SIS projects proposed
An Ohio University proposal to issue $40 million in bonds to upgrade the university's technology infrastructure and purchase a new Student Information System took a step forward Thursday when a Board of Trustees committee reviewed the project's scope as well as its impact on students and university finances. The project will come before the full board in January.
 
Memorial service planned, scholarship created for Ohio graduate [OU-COM]
A memorial service for a volunteer with the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine's ComCorps who died this week will be held Saturday in his hometown of Cuyahoga Falls. James David Ball, 23, died from injuries suffered from an accidental fall on Tuesday.
 
Research projects get $3.84 million boost
Two energy-related research projects at Ohio University will receive almost $4 million in federal funding, U.S. Rep. Charlie Wilson and university officials announced in a news conference this morning.
