What you'll need to do to enroll in the Women's & Gender Studies Bachelor of Arts Major:

  • You do not need an advisor's signature to enroll. Simply go to the College of Arts and Sciences in Wilson Administrative and fill out an "Application for Update of Program." The Women's & Gender Studies major code is BA 4402.

What you'll need to do to enroll in a Women's & Gender Studies Certificate Program:

  • Visit the Women's & Gender Studies office (004 Lindley Hall) to pick up either an undergraduate or a graduate information packet.
  • Fill out the two forms inside: the Change of Program form, and the Women's Studies Certificate Enrollment form.
  • Come back to the Women's Studies office during Lynette Peck's office hours so that she can sign your Change of Program form.  If her office hours are not convenient for you, contact her by email (peck@ohio.edu) to arrange an appointment.  You may also call her during her office hours at 593-4687.
  • After your Change of Program form is signed, you'll need to take it to your particular college (undergraduates) or to the Graduate Studies office in McKee House (graduate students).
  • Remember that you must be enrolled in the certificate program at least one full quarter before you plan to graduate, so it's best to start the paperwork as soon as you can.

Advising FAQs for Undergraduates:

Can I substitute another course for a required WS core course?

No.  The Women's & Gender Studies certificate curriculum depends on the analytical, theoretical, and historical building blocks laid down in the four required WGS courses:  WGS 100, WGS 200, WGS 350, and WGS 480.  To receive the certificate, you must take all four.  While there are advantages to taking them in order, doing so is not required.

If a course is not on the permanent list of courses, can it still count toward my certificate?

Possibly.  If in an upper-level course you have focused your research on gender, you might be able to count it toward your required 14 elective credits.  You will need to provide the WGS advisor with: a proposal letter in which you describe the research you have done in the course; a syllabus of the course; and a letter from the professor (email is fine) in support of the substitution.

Can I enroll in the Women's and Gender Studies certificate program if I'm a student on a branch campus?

Certainly.  The enrollment process is the same for branch-campus students.  (If you can't make it to the Athens campus, call the WS advisor at 593-4687.)  Be aware, however, that campuses vary as to which courses are offered where.

Advising FAQs for Graduate Students:

Can I substitute another course for WGS 589?

No.  WGS 589 is a capstone seminar in which you will be introduced to major theoretical trends in the field and have the opportunity to work closely with the professor in producing a significant piece of scholarly research.  It is the only required course in the graduate certificate program, and cannot be substituted.

If a course is not on the permanent list of courses, can it still count toward my certificate?

Possibly.  If in another graduate course you have focused your research on gender, you might be able to count it toward your required 12 elective credits.  You will need to provide the WS advisor with: a proposal letter in which you describe the research you have done in the course; a syllabus of the course; and a letter from the professor (email is fine) in support of the substitution.
