Description

Development of listening skills for understanding elements of musical style in historical perspective and significance of music as fine art.

Prerequisites

Nonmusic major.

Course Objectives

  1. Understand the concept of combining the elements to create music.

  2. Be able to identify the differences between the various musical forms (i.e. return forms, strophic form, additive forms, etc.).

  3. Be able to identify the differences between the various musical genres (i.e. symphony, concerto, song cycle, overture, mass, madrigal, etc.)

  4. Understand the historical aspects, compositional tenets or conventions of each style period.

  5. Develop and apply the vocabulary used to describe music.
