heavy wings
poems by Alvin Greenberg

heavy wings is Alvin Greenberg's seventh book of poems. He is the author of three novels and four books of short stories, including Delta Q, which won the Associated Writing Programs Short Fiction Award in 1982. In 1988 he received the Pablo Neruda Prize in Poetry.

"What a lovely book. Until I read it I didnít know buoyancy and pain could be so closely intertwined. Heavy as they are, these wings fly. Alvin Greenberg's language is wonderfully alive and his energetic lines bounce off each other, making this book uncommonly readable."

-- Lisel Mueller

" . . the heavy wings section is especially beautiful, an elegiac love figure, the best thing, I think, that Greenberg has written, and he's written some very good poems. In that sequence it seems to me that all of his inventive gifts, his intelligence, and his deft handling of absurdity are grounded in deep feeling. The sequence is rich and affecting all the way through."

-- Stephen Dunn
