These poems arrive mostly from a small rural town, often with a local twang. Often they want to tell a story and just as often that story stays at the edge of the yard. Of course, everything that happens in the yard happens within the pull of that story's gravity.

"What I'm really after is getting the accent right, getting the pitch right and giving our daily tools their due. There is more in the backyard than we can comprehend, but I've made a few notes."

-- Michael Chitwood

Michael Chitwood has an ear for the bumps and ruptures of American speech, for the way we wear our hearts not so much on our sleeves but on our dictions. Salt Worksis a book youíll want to read and re-read, and Chitwood is a poet about whom youíll wonder, with real anticipation, what he'll do next.

--William Matthews
