Support the 'Cats: Attend an Athletic Event
Come on out and root for the Bobcats. Men and women compete in 18 sports and admission is free for students with a valid ID. Work Behind the Scenes: Get a Job
Learn job skills, meet people, and make some extra cash! Find out about jobs on and off campus as well as Federal Work-Study and PACE (Program to Aid Career Exploration). Research it: Apply to Provost's Undergraduate Research Fund
This fund provides annual awards to undergraduates enrolled on the Athens campus who are engaged in original research projects, creative projects, research apprenticeships or other scholarly work. Awards must be used for research-related travel, materials or supplies. The deadline for all applications will be in late September and awards will be announced in late October. Application forms will be made available in May at the Honors Tutorial College and at http://www.ohiou.edu/honors

Work Out & Have Fun: Visit a Rec Facility
Swimming, ice skating, golfing, tennis, basketball, running, wall climbing -- whatever kind of recreation you might enjoy, Ohio University has the place to do it. Admission to the Aquatic Center, Bird Arena, Outdoor Tennis Courts, and Ping Center are provided for OU students. Fees are assessed at the Golf Course, Driving Range, and Indoor Tennis Courts. Student Senate and Graduate Student Senate provide students with opportunities to participate in the governance of Ohio University. Student Senate offers an internship program especially for first-year students.

Stop by and find out about volunteer opportunities like Habitat for Humanity; work-study jobs at places like Big Brothers & Sisters; and service-learning classes that spend time in schools and nursing homes. Community Connections: Take a Non-Credit Class
Looking for something fun to do in Athens? Want to meet new and exciting people from the Athens community? Want to learn something new without worrying about getting a good grade? Community and Professional Programs sponsors a quarterly bulletin of non-credit classes for area community members, students, faculty, and staff. Classes meet only one to six sessions and are usually held only in the evenings or on weekends. Help Others: Become a Peer Advisor
One of the best ways to get connected is to help others. All across campus, students work or volunteer to help other students by serving as peer advisors.

Supplemental Instruction Leaders help students achieve academic success by leading free, out-of-class, study sessions for select courses that have high failure and poor performance rates. Contact Academic Advancement Center, Alden Library, 593-2652.

Student Leadership Consultants serve as consultants to student organizations and help them to improve their leadership and functioning. They provide training on topics that student leaders and groups need. Contact Student Activities, 204 Baker University Center, 593-4025.

POWER is a group of peer health educators that provides workshops for student organizations, residence halls and others on sexual issues, sexual assault, alcohol and other drugs, nutrition and exercise, relationships and sexual communication, spirituality, stress management and general wellness issues. LINKS are peer mentors for first-year African American and Hispanic students. They help first-year minority students make a successful academic and social transition to Ohio University and the surrounding community. Contact University College, 140 Chubb Hall, 593-1935.

Ohio University Recruiting Society (OURS) assists in the recruitment of multicultural students to the campus. Members host visitors, make telephone contact, and help prospective students learn about the University. Contact Admissions, 120 Chubb Hall, 593-4100.

Broadcast: Volunteer in Radio or TV
Student volunteers are the backbone of the Ohio University Telecommunications Center. The Center operates 6 radio stations, 2 television stations, 2 cable channels plus instructional microwave and compressed video classrooms covering parts of Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky. Positions are available to all students, regardless of major. Students may be radio talent, news talent, camera operators, and directors. Diversify Your World ~ Your Campus!
College is a time to expand your understanding of the world beyond your past learning and current viewpoints. This is not a time to cling to the known. Seek the unknown!

Meet people from different backgrounds. Talk to someone from another country. Take classes to better understand dynamics around racism, sexism, homophobia, socio-economic differences and other important aspects of our society. Attend programs and dialogues that expose you to people different than those you grew up with. Take steps to figure out your own culture.
