More than Narnia? The Life and Writings of C. S. Lewis
(Fall 2007)
While
the recent popularity (thanks to Walden Media’s major
motion picture) of Chronicles of Narnia has put the writings of the
Oxford
Professor in the front of the bookstore, causing many to consider his
works for
the first time, Clive Staples Lewis has long been one of my favorite
authors. I
enjoy his raw emotion, banter-and-argument, long strands of logic,
allegory,
humor, and tenderness. Yes, in many ways, Lewis’ writings
span the gamut of
human emotion—one minute railing at God for taking his
beloved mother and later
his wife, another minute reasoning that there is a God who loves us
very much.
Lewis is known not only for the fantastical characters found in The
Lion, the
Witch, and the Wardrobe, but also for his radio talks over the London
airwaves
during World War II, his love affair with the American divorcee Joy
Greshem
(whom he married), his analyses of joy and pain, Christian apologetics,
and the
four distinct kinds of love our hearts desire in a lifetime.
Great Teachers Movies
(Winter 2007)
I have
always wanted to teach a course on inspirational
teacher films such as Dead Poets Society, Dangerous Minds, Music of the
Heart, Stand
& Deliver, and the list goes on. So one of my courses is
designed to do
just that. The class will watch several films in their entirety, then
watch
other films independently outside of class and bring in the
“best 15 minutes”
to share with the class. We will be analyzing the films for effective
teaching
strategies that we will keep track of in a journal that will also
involve
outside resources. The course will also involve supporting texts such
as Holler
if You Hear Me: The Education of a Teacher and His Students and Fires
in the
Bathroom: Advice for Teachers from High School Students.
