Uniquely Human: The Science of Speech Communication
(Winter/Spring 2007)

Using speech for communication appears effortless. However, the mechanisms underlying speech production and perception are far from straightforward. Humans evolved a vocal tract that enables the production of a rich yet universal inventory of speech sounds. Humans are also endowed with an auditory system capable of discriminating speech sounds at only a few weeks of age. The ability to use speech for communication is implicated in our cognitive and linguistic capacities, which make us uniquely human.

The series of two courses will explore the science behind speech communication. The first course will introduce the anatomy and physiology of speech production and the physical properties of speech sounds.  Students will learn to design and execute a speech perception experiment.

These courses should be of interest to students of psychology, linguistics, biology, physics, computer science, electrical engineering, speech-language pathology and audiology, and anyone with an interest in the science of speech. In the second course, students will be graded on their research article presentations and final paper, which is a literature review on a topic of their choice.
