Course
Description

This is a 3-hour graduate workshop that will incorporate children’s literature, picture books, historical fiction, biographies, and non-fiction and the Internet as resources to teach the 20’s and 30’s.  We are teaching the 20’s and 30’s through the perspectives of all main characters in the required books.  The materials were selected to provide background information to teachers at all levels from K-8.  The activities will be divided into 8 sections.  Questions will be completed on line and sent by email for evaluation.  Participants must be online a minimum of 20 hours.

Methods of Course Instruction

All course content is presented on the World Wide Web; e-mail is used for submission of assignments, as well as for the instructor's evaluation and comments.

Course Objectives

The teacher will be able to

  1. Identify and critique children’s literature books

  2. Compare and contrast leading characters

  3. Link Internet sites to historical information exhibited in the books

  4. Evaluate Internet sites that correlate to the novels

  5. Explain the research on the importance of using historical fiction in the classroom
