Course
Description

This 4-hour undergraduate course is designed to acquaint middle childhood preservice teachers with all genre of adolescent literature. Content will include the history of children’s literature, picture books, novels, and non-fiction. Students will also discuss a variety of methods to incorporate children’s literature into their classrooms.

Prerequisites

Admission to advanced standing.



Methods of Course Instruction

All course content is presented on the World Wide Web; e-mail is used for submission of assignments, as well as for the instructor's evaluation and comments.

Course Objectives

After completion of this course the student will be able to

  1. Explain the criteria for selecting Caldecott and Newbery Award books.
  2. Distinguish the different genre of children’s literature.
  3. Discuss the history of children’s literature.
  4. Develop a variety of methods to teach children’s literature.
  5. Appreciate the value of using literature in the classroom.
  6. Evaluate and distinguish the best books written for children.
  7. Incorporate children’s literature into all subject areas.

  • Book Study-Due Week 7

  • Weekly Assignments

Lectures and questions are on blackboard, and you will need a password to access the, All assignments must be submitted by Saturday of that week. Due dates are identified for project work. Contact the instructor if assignments can not be submitted on the assigned date. Reading log and book study can be mailed to the instructor.

Please take time to read through the syllabus and decide which books you want to read. It is a good idea to check your local library to make sure they have the books. All the suggested books are award winners, and they are usually in a separate section in the children’s library section. The books are also at the OUE library.
