Course
Description

Historical development of photography from its inception to present including comprehensive study of artistic and technical development of major photography movements.

Prerequisites

None

Methods of Course Instruction

This course will be conducted entirely through Blackboard.

Course Objectives

This course covers the history and theorization of photography.  Topics covered include photographic techniques, types of photography such as documentary, photo narrative, landscape, and black-and-white and color photography.  Students will be introduced to some basic critical theory about photography and its relationship to other art forms and visual culture throughout history.

General Course Requirements

  1. Homepage, introduction, and response to someone else’s introduction:  This is not graded, but failure to do this will result in the final grade being lowered half a letter grade.

  2. Weekly “worksheets” (20 points each, timed at 30 minutes):  There are eight of these—one for each chapter in the textbook.  Most of them have 10 multiple-choice or true/false questions, worth two points each; one is a matching exercise, which is also worth 20 points.  These are due at the end of the week for which the chapter is assigned, and will be submitted from the Assignments page.  Worksheets can be attempted only once, which means you cannot save your answers and go back later to finish.  (Hence, you will need to have finished the reading before you open each worksheet, since you will not have much time to look through the book for the correct answers.)

  3. Timeline of the History of Photography (100 points):  This is due at the end of Week 3; late timelines will be docked one letter grade per day that they are late, beginning immediately after the Sunday-midnight deadline passes.  Detailed instructions and grading criteria are located in the Week 3 folder in Assignments.  This is to be submitted twice—directly from the Assignments page and on the Discussion Board.  You must also comment on two of your classmates’ timelines.  Failure to submit using both methods will result in a five-point deduction; failure to post comments will result in a 10-point deduction.

  4. Two essay exams, based on outside readings (100 points each):  These will be taken through Blackboard, but there is no time limit and you can save and go back to them as often as you like, as long as they are completed and submitted by the end of the designated exam period.  (The exam periods are listed in the course schedule.)
