Course

The course asks you to think about what painting does (over what it “is”), and what a effects it is able to actualize in the viewer. How does it function in culture and society? How does it communicate, and even create, a particular set of values and ideas? How does it help to organize the community to whom it is addressed? How does that mode of address operate? Our interest will remain on the “how does it communicate” part of the question. This course is designed to help you develop visual literacy by granting you the tools and methods of visual analysis in order to think about how painting in this historical era evolved and works. As a group, we will learn to look at works of art carefully and analytically in order to articulate visual experience through language. We will be inquiring into the ways that art operates through case studies of major works from the Middle Ages to the Baroque, or from 1300 to 1700, from Cimabue and Giotto through Velázquez and Poussin. This is a discussion course, not a lecture. Regular class participation in the form of posting, in addition to the completion of “quizzes” designed to facilitate class discussion, are therefore crucial to your success in the course. They will contribute to your final grade.
