Winter Intersession Courses 2008-2009 Information
Ohio University Office of Summer Sessions & OU Online, Winter Intersession is accepting course proposals for the Winter Intersession 2008-09 at this time. Please consider this teaching opportunity during the winter break beginning on November 24. Please see our website www.ohiou.edu/summer/intersession.html for additional information and access to the required planning/approval documents.
Winter Intersession provides a number of options for students and faculty. Intersession 2007 provided 638 students with 30 course options. Departments that have classes with high demand can take advantage of the session to offer an additional section of that class. Winter Intersession also offers an additional opportunity for faculty to offer a popular elective that is normally difficult to fit in the academic year schedule.
Winter Intersession courses are offered in compressed duration and many are offered in a variety of formats including: traditional, online, and blended formats. Faculty members may choose to offer an inperson, traditional session course in a one, two or three week format. Contact hours per day depend on the length of time the faculty member chooses to teach the course. Library hours are extended during winter intersession to insure that students have sufficient access while studying. Or, faculty may offer an online class for five weeks duration. Courses may be scheduled from November 24-December 26.
Course grades for Winter Intersession will appear on the Winter 2009 grade report. Fees for winter intersession classes are paid separately and are not part of either fall or winter comprehensive fees. Therefore, registration for a winter intersession course will not prevent a student from registering for 20 credits during the regular winter quarter.
Faculty members will be paid on an overload contract using the university overload pay scale. Faculty will also receive a $500 course development stipend for each new course revised as a winter intersession offering. Deadline for submission of planning documents is August 29. A delay in placing a course in the schedule of classes has a negative effect on the course enrollments. Students begin checking for winter intersession courses during the summer. All approved courses will be listed and regularly added to the registrar’s web page.
Departments are rewarded monetarily for offering Winter intersession opportunities to students. Paybacks of $75 per registration or up to $1875/course are returned to departments for internal use.
