| Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)
June 16-July 28, 2008 Undergrad. The Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine provides a wide variety of summer research opportunities for undergraduate students interested in careers in medicine or biomedical research. Participants in this program work in an active research laboratory under the guidance of a faculty member. The program is deliberately flexible, so that students may combine lab work with other educational experiences. Selection is based on academic records and the appropriateness of applicants' scientific interests. Students about to begin their senior year of college studies are preferred, but promising juniors and recent graduates are considered. Participants are provided with room, board, and a $1,750 stipend. Eight undergraduate credit hours in biology are awarded tuition-free to all program participants. Program participants who meet minimum requirements for admission to OU-COM, including having taken the MCAT, will be offered an opportunity to interview during the summer. Grad and Undergrad. Prerequisite: PBIO 210, PBIO 331 or equivalents. Lab CaMPP is an intensive laboratory experience in plant cell biology, molecular biology and physiology for upper division undergraduates and graduate students. This is a unique and excellent opportunity for students to gain experience in techniques routinely used in research labs. Topics include: DNA biotechnology, protein biochemistry (SDS-PAGE, Western blotting), plant cell biology (organelle fractionation), enzyme activity measurement, and plant transformation (expression of GFP).

Grad and Undergrad. This lab is an intensive laboratory experience in soil science, biogeochemistry, and microbial ecology for upper division undergraduates and graduate students. Students will 1) learn methods in field sampling and proper starage; 2) become proficient in preparing and analyzing large quantities of soil and plant tissue; 3) become familiar with techniques and equipment to estimate soil activity and soil and litter quality; 4) interpret data for hypothesis testing. Medicinal Plants of Ohio

Undergrad. The objective of this course is to familiarize students with the diversity of medicinal plants that can be found growing wild or cultivated in southern Ohio. We will primarily concentrate on how to identify medicinal/edible/poisonous plants in the field. We will also explore how these plants are used in folk, alternative, and contemporary medicine through lectures, reading, field trips, and lab about making herbal preparations.
