International students, including those studying at other U.S. colleges and universities, are welcome to attend Ohio University during the summer as nondegree, visiting students.
The University is home to one of the country's largest foreign student populations. During the summer, we welcome many students from abroad who want to experience American collegiate life.
International students register for courses and housing using the same procedures and forms as other visiting students. Additionally, our Office of International Student and Faculty Services provides assistance to those new to the U.S. and Ohio University.
The Office of International Student and Faculty Services is the principle office for assisting international students. Advisors assist students with personal problems, adjustment questions, visa matters and issues related to enrollment at the University. When you arrive at Ohio University, report to this office located in 172 Scott Quad (740)593-4330.
As classes are taught in English, it is essential that the student understand and be able to communicate in English. International students new to the University must be tested by the Ohio Program of Intensive English before they can enroll in regular classes. The test is usually administered during the second week in June. Students who have studied in the U.S. at another school for at least one year may be exempted.
Health insurance is available to all international students who register full-time during the summer session. If you plan to register for fewer than seven credit hours, you will not be eligible for the insurance. Ask an advisor how to obtain private health insurance.
Visas
If you are outside the U.S., you may come to Ohio University with a variety of visas. If you are already in the U.S. as a student from another university, you do not have to change your visa status if you plan to return to your school after summer. If you do not plan to return to your school, call the Office of International Student and Faculty Services, (740) 593-4330.
