FINANCIAL AID

Questions regarding financial assistance for the 2007 Summer Sessions can be directed to the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships (OSFAS), 020 Chubb Hall, (740) 593-4141, (740) 593-4140 fax, email: financialaid@ohiou.edu, web: http://www-sfa.chubb.ohiou.edu/.

Summer Sessions begins the 2007-2008 award year for financial aid disbursements. To apply for aid, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You can obtain a FAFSA from any high school, college or university, or from the OSFAS, or you can complete the FAFSA on the web at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. Completion of the FAFSA determines your eligibility for federal, university, and state aid, including the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loans, the Federal Pell Grant and the Ohio Instructional Grant (OIG).

FAFSA information must be received by the central processor by March 15, 2007 in order for you to be considered first priority for Federal Work Study, Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant. We recommend that if you mail your form to the central processor, you do so by February 1 to ensure that your FAFSA results are received before the deadline.

To apply for scholarships, upperclass students must complete the on-line application located on the OSFAS website. Applications must be submitted by March to be considered first priority for scholarships. Freshmen and transfer scholarship applicants must complete the Application for Admission and Scholarships from the Application Bulletin. Eligible applicants are considered for all scholarships. Aid applicants will receive an award letter listing financial aid eligibility. Students who are awarded loans (Federal Perkins Loan and any of the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loans) will also be sent a promissory note. This promissory note must be completed and returned to the OSFAS before the loan can be disbursed.

Financial Aid Disbursement

Please indicate on the FAFSA if you plan to attend summer sessions of the 2007-2008 award year. If after you receive your award letter, you realize that you were not awarded aid for summer quarter, please inform the OSFAS that you plan to attend summer sessions and wish to receive some of your financial aid in summer quarter.

Financial aid awards which exceed the amount you owe to the University will be disbursed to you as an "overage check(s)" during the summer quarter if you have satisfied the eligibility requirements (i.e., enrolled for sufficient hours, meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress standards, not in default on a Title IV Loan, etc.) for each award. Overage checks should be mailed from the Office of Disbursement/Loan Collections, and you should contact that office at (740) 593-9932 if you have any questions regarding the mailing of your check. The first overage checks for Summer Quarter Federal Direct Loans will be mailed on or about Monday, July 2, 2007. All overage checks will be mailed to your local school address. Please be sure your local (school) address is correct by calling the OSFAS at (740) 593-4141, the Registrar's Office at (740) 593-4191 or the Disbursement/Loan Collections Office at (740) 593-9932.

Aid will be disbursed to students who are registered for sufficient hours based on their combined enrollment in the first, second, and full summer sessions.

  • University Scholarships 16 hours
  • Grants 12 hours (for full award)
  • Outside Agency Scholarships 12 hours
  • Federal Perkins Loans: Undergraduates 12 hours (for full award)
  • Federal Perkins Loans: Graduates 9 hours (for full award)
  • Federal Direct Loans: Undergraduates 6 hours
  • Federal Direct Loans: Graduates 5 hours

If you fail for ANY reason, to maintain the number of credit hours required for your financial aid, you will have to repay any overage check that was issued to you. In addition, any financial aid that was applied to University charges will be reversed, and you will be responsible for paying those charges. A hold will be placed on your record, and no aid will be disbursed in future quarters until the money from summer quarter is repaid.

Preregistered for Summer Sessions

Fee statements for summer are sent from the Bursar and will show ALL financial aid awards (other than Federal Work Study) that have been finalized at that time. All financial aid recipients must pay the balance due by the regular payment deadlines for Summer Quarter fees and housing charges. Failure to meet this deadline will result in cancellation of classes and university housing assignments. There will be no holding of classes or room reservations for late financial aid applicants except in extraordinary circumstances.

Course Load Requirements and Registration

If you are receiving financial assistance during Summer Sessions, you must register at least half-time during preregistration or during the first five days of the quarter in order to qualify for all or a portion of your financial aid award. Scholarship recipients must carry a minimum of 16 credit hours.

Since the summer quarter is divided into three terms, students receiving financial assistance must register for all terms at the time of initial registration. This action is necessary in order for your financial aid to be properly credited to your account. Ohio Valley summer Theater (OVST) Scholarship recipients must register for at least 16 credit hours to receive the full award. Pell, SEOG, OU Grant and Perkins recipients will have their awards pro-rated if registered for fewer than 12 hours.
