ADMISSION AND REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Learning takes place year-round at Ohio University and the campus is bustling in the summer, although at a more relaxed pace. This website lists many opportunities for summer study, both formal and informal.

Because Ohio University has an open admissions policy during the summer session, classes traditionally include a rich blend of visiting students from other campuses, interested members of the community, and our own Ohio University students. Together they participate in undergraduate and graduate courses taught by Ohio University's internationally known faculty, study in specialized summer workshops and institutes led by experts in their fields, and take credit and noncredit courses for professional development or personal interest. This is your guide to a sensational summer in southeastern Ohio.

For complete registration information including a calendar of dates, course load information, course descriptions, and more, please visit the Registrar's website at www.ohiou.edu/registrar.

Undergraduate Students

During the summer session only, you may register for any undergraduate course as a nondegree student. However, prerequisites are specified for certain courses and they must be fulfilled. If you are a continuing Ohio University undergraduate student enrolled anytime after 1985, please use Web Registration to register beginning April 8.

Students Pursuing a Degree at another College or University

Admission to Ohio University as a regular degree seeking student is not required for summer study. Enrollment in summer sessions is open to all students without regard to age, sex, race, religion, color, creed, disability, national or ethnic origin, or marital status. You may study at Ohio University during summer sessions only as a nondegree, noncontinuing, visiting student.

Credit generally can be transferred to other institutions; the accepting institution, however, establishes the policy in this matter. You are therefore urged to make arrangements in advance with your home institution so that you will know that the credit you earn will transfer.

Ohio University is on the quarter-hour system. Each University course credit value in quarter hours is indicated after the course number and title in the course listings. The following table shows the relative value of quarter and semester hours:

  • 1.5 quarter hours = 1 semester hour
  • 3.0 quarter hours = 2 semester hours
  • 4.5 quarter hours = 3 semester hours
  • 6.0 quarter hours = 4 semester hours
  • 7.5 quarter hours = 5 semester hours

New Student Orientation

New degree-seeking students enrolling during the summer session must attend orientation. Orientation for students attending Summer Sessions will be held on Friday, June 15. For more information about these orientation sessions, please contact Richard Linn, (740) 593-1951.

Graduate Students

Registration for any graduate course offered during the Summer Sessions requires official admission to the University with degree or nondegree status.

The conditions of postbaccalaureate admission are the same as for nondegree graduate status (during the Summer Sessions only): (a) admission status terminates after completion of 18 graduate hours, (b) admission to nondegree status does not constitute admission to a graduate degree program, (c) credit earned cannot normally be applied toward a graduate degree at Ohio University. Some graduate courses, such as those in the MBA program, are not open to students admitted to postbaccalaureate status. If in doubt about the acceptability of postbaccalaureate status for a specific course, check with the department offering the course. Enrollment as a new degree-seeking graduate student requires official admission to the University. To receive the necessary application materials and information, contact the Office of Graduate Student Services, McKee House, (740) 593-2800.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION

The Undergraduate Catalog, available at the Office of Admissions and the Graduate Catalog, available through the Office of Graduate Student Services, contain detailed information about the degree programs offered through Ohio University. Prior to registering for courses, you should consult these catalogs to determine the graduation requirements for your program of study.

Summer courses are offered for one or two five-week sessions, for the full ten-week term or for shorter, intensive lengths such as one or two weeks. The standard load of course work for the entire summer term is 16-20 credit hours (undergraduate) and 9-18 hours (graduate).

Intensive classes, workshops, and special programs offered during the summer vary in length, as noted in their descriptions. Registration for all classes including workshops will begin April 3. Certain workshops and programs, however, do have earlier registration or application deadlines than others, as noted in the descriptions. Please contact the Office of Summer Sessions, Haning Hall, 1-888-551-6446 if you would like more details about any of these programs.

Credits are designated in quarter hours. Credit hours applicable to any given course taken in the summer are the same as for other quarters. If you plan to attend both sessions, you are encouraged to register for all of your courses at the time of your initial registration.

Some classes and workshops listed are offered only if enrollment is sufficient. To be certain that a specific course, specific workshop or special program will be offered, please contact the Office of Summer Sessions.
