HISTORY

Southeast Ohio magazine has come a long way. Magazine journalism students in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University have been producing this award-winning magazine for over 30 years. In the winter of 1970, students produced a one-time publication called Appalachia 70. The following spring quarter a new batch of students produced another one-time magazine named Reach Out. In 1971, the magazine chose a more permanent name, Athens Magazine, which students produced until 1988. This magazine focused on the city of Athens and covered the perspective of students and long-time residents alike.

It wasn’t until 1988 when Southeast Ohio magazine was officially born. The new title reflected the growing need for a magazine that covered not only Athens, but also the region around it. The twenty counties that Southeast Ohio magazine covers include Athens, Belmont, Fairfield, Gallia, Guernsey, Hocking, Jackson, Lawrence, Meigs, Monroe, Morgan, Muskingum, Noble, Perry, Pickaway, Pike, Ross, Scioto, Vinton and Washington.

Southeast Ohio magazine is published three times a year with a new staff every issue. This gives the magazine a breath of new life every issue and an opportunity to showcase the region in a new light. It also provides a valuable learning experience for every student involved in the production. We strive to showcase all Southeast Ohio has to offer while producing a magazine that is representative of the region.
