Graduate Assistantships

Prior to being considered for any graduate assistant (GA) position, a student must meet the admission criteria and be accepted into graduate school at Ohio University. The student must also maintain the academic standards of the school in which they are enrolled. There are three basic types of graduate assistant positions in the School of Recreation and Sport Sciences: Teaching Assistant, Research Assistant, and Office Assistant.

Approximately 20 graduate assistantships are available in the School of Recreation and Sport Sciences. In addition, 26 assistantship positions are also available in Campus Recreation (8), Intercollegiate Athletics (12), Outdoor Pursuits (1) and WellWorks (5).


School of Recreation and Sport Sciences

The graduate assistantships in the School of Recreation and Sport Sciences are based on the student's ability to best assist the school in accomplishing its academic mission. There are two types of graduate assistant student positions in the School of Recreation and Sport Sciences: teaching assistants and research assistants. In return for a stipend of $8,835 (minimum) and a full tuition wavier for the academic year, 15-20 hours per week is required, including office hours. Term of appointment is September through June. All Teaching Assistants are required to maintain current American Red Cross certification in both CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Standard First Aid and Safety. If certification expires prior to the end of the academic year, students must either make arrangements for recertification prior to the expiration date, or participate in the certification sessions scheduled during the second week of Fall classes. Any employee who has a potential to come in contact with blood will be required to attend Blood Borne Pathogens Training.

In addition to graduate assistantships, the School receives a limited number of Graduate Recruitment Scholarships (GRS) from the Office of Graduate Studies.

Aquatics - Teaching Assistant
1 position

Teaching a variety of aquatics courses including aqua aerobics, beginning and intermediate swimming, Water Safety Instructor (WSI) and Life Guard Training. Supervising other swimming instructors and assisting with the overall aquatics program may be required. Candidates must hold a Life Guard Instructor Certification and be certified in First Aid and CPR. Candidates with previous teaching experience are preferred.

Exercise Physiology - Teaching Assistant
3 positions

Teaching a variety of undergraduate basic biology, exercise physiology and exercise physiology application classes (lecture and laboratory), including biomechanics. Preparing and delivering lesson plans, maintaining records and preparing evaluation reports as appropriate to the assignment. Candidates must possess strong laboratory (exercise physiology) skills and be admitted in the Physiology of Exercise graduate program.

First Aid/CPR - Teaching Assistant
4 positions

Teaching work place training and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. Maintaining equipment/manikins & records. Training students/faculty in both the above courses who work for the School of Recreation and Sport Sciences. Current instructor certification to teach American Red Cross, Work Place Training and CPR for the professional rescuer is required. All TAs must maintain 3 to 4 office hours per week. All FA/CPR applicants must supply a course schedule for the following academic year.

Physical Education and Sport Sciences (PESS) - Teaching Assistant
Physical Education Activity Program (PED) - Teaching Assistant

8 positions

Teaching a variety of physical education activity and sport sciences classes to undergraduate majors. Preparing and delivering lesson plans, maintaining records and preparing evaluation reports as appropriate to the assignment. To display skill in human relations and actively participate in public relations as it pertains to the School of Recreation and Sport Sciences. Assisting in all aspects of the organization and administration of the service program as required. Candidates must possess strong skill ability and previous teaching experience are preferred.

Recreation Studies - Teaching Assistant
4 positions

Teaching or assisting with a variety of recreation activity classes such as backpacking, canoeing, orienteering, technical climbing/rappelling, survival, mountain biking, caving, winter sports, and various whitewater paddlesports. Working as an assistant leader of weekend trips and extended expeditions during winter intersession and spring break. Designing and delivering instructional plans, maintaining records, and preparing evaluation reports as appropriate to the assignment. Positive interpersonal skills are essential.

Campus Recreation
The Ohio University Division of Campus Recreation is comprised of the Charles J. Ping Student Recreation Center, Aquatic Center, Bird Ice Arena, Golf and Tennis Center, Driving Range, Intramural Sports, Fitness, Outdoor Pursuits, Club Sports and Special Events. Offering more than 70 intramural activities, over 30 club sports, and various special events, Campus Recreation exhibits a strong tradition of recreational excellence. Participants find a diversity of recreational opportunities, from drop-in aerobic fitness sessions and competitive intramural sports to informal “pick-up” basketball games.


Aquatic Center Assistant
1 position

Assisting the facility director in any and/or all aspects of the operation of the Aquatic Center at Ohio University, including administration and maintenance. Displaying skill in human relations and actively participating in public relations as it pertains to this facility and to the Division of Campus Recreation. Bird Arena Ice Rink
Graduate Assistant

1 position

Directly assisting the Director and Assistant Director of Bird Arena with programming and overall operations. Work on employee evaluations, discipline, training, incentives and staffing, special events, safety and emergency procedures, and management of the facility. The Bird Arena Graduate Assistant will also have the responsibility of offering the Learn to Skate program to children and adults. Charles J. Ping Student Recreation Center*
Graduate Assistant

2 positions

Assisting in the overall operation of the Charles J. Ping Student Recreation Center and the planning of special events and rentals. Supervising, evaluating, hiring and scheduling student staff. Actively participating in the area of public relations as it pertains to the Ping Recreation Center. Assisting in all aspects of the organization and administration of the Division of Campus Recreation and the Ping Recreation Center. Fitness Assistant
1 position

Assisting the Director of Fitness with development, implementation and evaluation of all fitness programs. Supervising, evaluating, hiring and scheduling undergraduate student staff who work in the fitness areas within the Charles J. Ping Student Recreation Center. Fitness Sessions
Graduate Assistant

1 position

Supervising, mentoring, evaluating, hiring and scheduling fitness instructors. Coordinating and supervising the training, hiring and continuing education of Fitness Sessions instructors. Completing monthly statistical and financial reports. Contributing articles for Fitness Monthly, the Campus Recreation Fitness newsletter. Planning, coordinating and executing Fitness Sessions special events. Work Fitness office hours assisting patrons with customer service. Golf & Tennis Center and Driving Range*
Graduate Assistant

1 position

Directly assisting the Director and Assistant Director of Golf & Tennis Center with programming and overall operations. Work with the Graduate Assistant of Bird Arena on employee evaluations, discipline, training, incentives and staffing, special events, safety and emergency procedures, and management of the facilities. The Golf & Tennis Center Graduate Assistant will also have the responsibility of offering all of the USTA Tennis programs to children and adults. Public relations and marketing pertaining to Intramural Sports. Assisting in all aspects of the organization and administration of Intramural Sports. Outdoor Pursuits
Graduate Assistant

Assisting the Director, Assistant Director, and Coordinator of Outdoor Pursuits with programming and overall operation of an adventure program and its facilities. Working on employee management, training, and evaluation. Wellworks

WellWorks is the Ohio University wellness program serving university employees and members of the surrounding community. The program has over 1500 members enrolled and offers a fitness center, cardiac rehabilitation, group exercise classes, fitness testing, educational programs, therapeutic massage, and nutrition counseling.

The GA positions in WellWorks require the following qualifications: accumulative GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale, current resume, letter of interest that includes the graduate program of study, beginning enrollment date, and duration of enrollment, three references - personal, professional, and academic; complete with name, address, and phone number. These positions require 15 hours per week and include a tuition waiver and stipend for each academic quarter ($7,800/3 quarters), plus mandatory fall quarter training the week prior to the beginning of classes.

Clinical Exercise Physiology Coordinator

Coordinating all aspects of membership enrollment, including conducting fitness assessments on new members; hiring, training, and supervising approximately 12 student employees; conducting telephone screenings; maintaining accurate records; preparing monthly reports; and facilitating staff meetings. Must be available during summer and winter breaks.

Group Exercise Coordinator

Coordinating all aspects of fitness classes (aerobics, swimming, yoga, Tai Chi, Pilates, aqua aerobics, group cycling), including hiring, training, and supervising approximately 10 instructors; scheduling of staff; teaching aerobic classes; developing new classes; maintaining accurate records; preparing monthly reports; and facilitating staff meetings.

Nutrition Coordinator

Coordinating the nutrition education program, including supervision of undergraduate students, both PACE and volunteers in nutrition education activities. Reviewing and revising educational materials, and supervising the out-reach program. Maintaining records, including program evaluations; attending weekly staff meetings.

Screening Coordinator

Coordinating all aspects of the campus-wide employee blood pressure screenings, including recruitment, training, scheduling and supervising the screening volunteers; preparing screening supplies and educational materials; scheduling the screening sites; conducting blood pressure screenings; and maintaining statistical database of blood pressure data.

Worksite Programs Coordinator

Coordinating all aspects of the worksite wellness education program, including training and supervising the PACE Worksite Programs Assistant. Volunteering in worksite education activities; developing, reviewing, revising, and evaluating educational materials and programs; ordering and tracking educational brochures, organizing bulletin board topics/schedule, and logging and distributing incentive prizes.
