Athletic Training

This is a CAAHEP-accredited program that qualifies you to take the National Athletic Trainers' Association Inc., Certification Examination and the State of Ohio Athletic Trainer Licensure Examination. You are awarded the Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training upon completion of the program.

Selected admission to the major is gained through an on-campus interview and the completion of curriculum application materials, in addition to the regular university application materials, before February 1. If you are selected for the program, you are required to show proof of a Hepatitis B vaccination and physical exam before you enroll. You must complete a minimum of 800 hours of clinical experience between your sophomore and senior years. Successful completion of the CAAHEP-accredited program qualifies you to take the National Athletic Trainers' Association Inc., Certification Examination and the State of Ohio Athletic Trainer Licensure Examination.

Application to the Program

All students interested in Athletic Training Education must be admitted into Ohio University with a designated major code of ND8117 (Pre-Athletic Training). In order to continue in Athletic Training beyond the first year you must apply to and be accepted into the program. Applications are due during the freshman year on or before May 1st. Decisions for acceptance will be finalized on or before July 1st.

Admission criteria and processes are:

  1. Successfully complete:
    RSAT 140 - Principles of Athletic Training,
    RSAT 145 - Practical Aspects of Athletic Training,
    RSAT 150 - Prevention/Management of Athletic Injuries
    with at least a B (3.0) in each course. (Students would apply while enrolled in RSAT 150).
  2. Have earned at least a 2.0 accumulative grade point average.
  3. Earned 45 hours by the end of spring quarter of application year.
  4. Be eligible to take BIOS 301/302 by the first quarter of sophomore year.
  5. Provide documentation of 60 hours of athletic training observation (documentation forms are available at the Undergraduate Athletic Training Education Office).
  6. Provide documentation of hepatitis B and TB vaccinations.
  7. Return the athletic training application to the Undergraduate Athletic Training Education Office, Ohio University, Grover Center E188, Athens, Ohio 45701, on or before May 1st. You can download a copy of the application at the bottom of this page.
  8. Successfully complete an on-campus interview with the Athletic Training Education Selection Committee. Interviews are conducted after May 1st. Students who will meet the selection criteria are invited to interview for the Athletic Training Education program.

Once admitted into Athletic Training Education, students must complete the technical standards for the Ohio University Undergraduate Athletic Training Education Program. These standards are found in the Athletic Training Program Policies and Procedure Manual distributed to all prospective students. They also are located on the athletic training education web site. The Athletic Training Selection Committee will choose a select group of approximately twenty students. Students not admitted must request a change of major.
