The Aquatic Center offers American Red Cross Lifeguard and Lifeguard Instructor courses. Instructors are certified through the American Red Cross in addition to having teaching experience. All course fees include course books and supplies, pool and classroom times, certification cards, meals and t-shirt.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING CHALLENGE COURSE– Sunday, April 20 at 2pm

CPR CHALLENGE COURSE– New course material for CPR training has been released by the American Red Cross. Therefore, for 2006-07 school year the challenge course is not available. Participants must enroll in the new lifeguard training course.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING – To register for this course, participants must be able to complete all of the following skills. 1) Retrieve 10lb brick from deep end, 2)500 yd swim – (20 lengths of the pool) without stopping 200 yds continuous Freestyle, 100 yd continuous Breaststroke, 200 yd choice of either Breaststroke or Freestyle, 3) 2 min treading water without use of hands, keeping head (ears, mouth and nose) out of the water.

Participants that can complete the above skills may register for the Lifeguard Training Program. The program is a 27 hour course, held over two weekends.
NOTE: Participation is required during all sessions. No make-ups will be permitted.

Successful participants will be able to complete the following skills to American Red Cross Standards:
Age 15 by the start of the course
Backboard Victim in shallow and deep water
Rescue Active and Passive Victims
Perform Escapes
Removal of Victim from Water
Demonstrate CPR and First Aid Skills
Final Written Exam

LIFEGUARD TRAINING INSTRUCTOR– Course is designed for those wanting to instruct the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course. Participants must be able to demonstrate and explain skills needed to become a lifeguard. To register for the course participants must be able to complete the same pretest as for Lifeguard training. In addition, applicants must be interviewed by the instructor trainer prior to the first day of classes.

Classes are offered at the same time as the Lifeguard Training Course for the purposes of gaining teaching experience under the watch of other instructors and the instructor trainer. Successful participants will be able to complete the following skills to American Red Cross Standards:
Age 17 by the start of the First Class

WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR (WSI)- This course is designed for those interested in teaching swimming lessons. An American Red Cross Course, water safety instructor course is a 36 hour course that is offered on an “as needed” basis. The course is designed to be taught over three (3) weekends, with practice teaching sessions during the Aquatic Center’s Monday and Wednesday Learn To Swim Program.

Classes are offered for the purposes of gaining teaching experience under the watch of the instructor trainer. Successful participants will be able to complete the following skills to American Red Cross Standards:
Age 17 By the start of the first class
Ability to demonstrate and explain all strokes and skills
Create lesson and follow thought with lesson plans
Create a positive learning environment
Obtain knowledge of:
American Red Cross Programs
Proper Teaching Techniques
Safety In and Around Aquatic Environment
