Patricia
Bayer Richard is Trustee Professor of Political Science.
From 1992-2001, she served as Dean of University College and
Associate Provost for Undergraduate Studies at Ohio University.
She also has directed the Political Science graduate program
and the Center for Political Communication, chaired the Faculty
Senate, and co-founded the Ohio University Women’s Studies Program.
Dr. Richard
received her Ph.D. from Syracuse University in 1975 and has
since written extensively about reproductive rights and about
democracy and elections. Her work has appeared in such
journals as the American Journal of Political Science, the
Journal of Politics, the Social Science Quarterly, Electoral
Studies, American Behavioral Scientist, and the Women’s Studies
Quarterly. She has contributed to many books as well,
including Elections and Democracy in Central American Revisited,
based on her work as an international election observer in
Nicaragua, The Practice of Political Communication, The Politics
of Abortion in the American States, and Gender Differences:
Their Impact on Public Policy.
She was
named one of the nation’s Outstanding Freshman Advocates in
1997 and has been elected president of the Association of
Deans and Directors of University Colleges and Undergraduate
Studies and to the executive council of the Association of
General and Liberal Studies. Dr. Richard has also participated
in a number of professional scholarly associations, as president
of the Midwest Women’s Caucus for Political Science, a member
of the executive council of the Midwest Political Science
Association, and a member of the MPSA’s Commission on the
Status of Women.
She currently
teaches courses in American Politics and Women, Law, and Politics.
