Purpose

To promote the public health of the academic community, and provide for medical care of students.

Policy

I.  Prematriculation Immunizations

There are no prematriculation immunization requirements. However, without proof of appropriate immunizations, students may be excluded from campus if an epidemic illness occurs.

II.  Tuberculin Skin Testing

International students, except Canadians, new to the Athens Campus or re-enrolling after an absence of two or more years must be evaluated for active tuberculosis.

III.  Health Insurance

All international students enrolled for one (1) or more credit hours on the Athens campus and all domestic students enrolled for seven (7) or more credit hours on the Athens campus must be covered by a health insurance plan. Students on the regional campuses who wish to enroll in the student insurance plan negotiated by Ohio University must contact the insurance carrier directly. They will not be automatically enrolled.

IV.  Eligibility for Services at Hudson Health Center

People in the following categories are eligible for the medical services of the Ohio University Student Health Service at Hudson Health Center:

A.  Students

Any student who is registered for the current quarter; or has preregistered or intends to enroll for the following quarter; or during the summer is beginning or continuing a graduate studies program in the Fall Quarter, even if as yet unregistered. This includes students enrolled on the Athens campus and on any of the regional campuses.

B.  Event Attendees

Anyone on campus attending special Ohio University programs, such as workshops, conferences, etc., for which a health fee has been paid

C.  Employees

Employees of Ohio University, as outlined in Policy 40.034, "Occupational Health Program for Classified Employees," and Policy 40.035, "Occupational Health Program for Administrative Appointees," through the Occupational Health Office.

Employees of Ohio University, as outlined in Student Health Service Procedure No. 36.012, through the Allergy Desensitization Clinic.

D.  Exceptions

Any other eligibility will be determined by the Director of the Student Health Service

Procedures

I. Prematriculation Immunizations

Students are encouraged to submit a list of immunizations they have received for documentation in the Student Health Service medical record.

II. Tuberculin Skin Testing

A tuberculin skin test (Mantoux) will be administered by Student Health Service personnel as soon as possible after entrance to the university.

All positive skin test reactors will undergo a chest x-ray for evaluation of active tuberculosis.

Referral to a treatment program will be recommended to positive reactors.

III. Health Insurance

All international students enrolled for one (1) or more hours on the Athens campus will be enrolled automatically in a health care insurance program. They may not waive this insurance coverage.

All domestic students enrolled for seven (7) or more hours on the Athens campus will be enrolled automatically in a health care insurance program. They may waive this insurance coverage by indicating their choice on the tuition statement and supplying information regarding their personal insurance coverage.

IV. Confirmation of Eligibility

Except in case of a medical emergency, a reasonable attempt will be made to confirm membership in one of the above-mentioned categories before medical services are provided.
