Lambda of Ohio Chapter | Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest and most respected undergraduate honors organization in the United States. The Society has pursued its mission of fostering and recognizing excellence in the liberal arts and sciences since 1776.

| Lambda of Ohio Chapter received its charter from the national Phi Beta Kappa organization in 1929. The formal installation and its first initiation of 13 undergraduates took place on 16 April 1929 in the Presbyterian Church in Athens. Then Ohio University President E. B. Bryan indicated in an article in the Athens Messenger "The granting of the Phi Beta Kappa Chapter to Ohio University is recognition of the high scholarship standards of the university."
Since its founding the Chapter has participated in the intellectual life of Ohio University by electing individuals to undergraduate, alumni, and honorary membership, by annual lectures by a recognized scholar, and by the awarding of the Thomas M. Wolfe Junior and Senior Awards for high scholastic achievement. | |
