STUDENT HEALTH SERVICE

  1. What is the cost of medical service provided at the Student Health Service?

    There are no charges to your student for physician visits, some laboratory tests (e.g., urinalysis, throat culture, CBC, glucose), the technical portion of x-ray processing, physical therapy, and some medicines. However, there are charges for prescription medications, annual gynecological appointments, immunizations, physician interpretation of x-rays, injections, lab tests sent to reference labs, orthopedic surgery consultations or treatments, physicals, and certain supplies and procedures. Charges for these items are based on the cost to the University to supply them. The fees are charged to your student's University account. Health plans and prescription drugs cannot be used directly, but paperwork with ICD-9-CM and CPT insurance codes with which you can apply for reimbursement from your health plan will be given to your student.

  2. If my student has a medical history of asthma or allergies and needs air conditioning in her or his residence hall room, how does she or he obtain the approval for an air conditioner?

    Application is made through Housing, where forms are available to apply for this special need.

  3. Can my student get allergy shots at Student Health Service?

    Allergy injections are administered by the nursing staff of the Student Health Service under the direction of your student's doctor. Please provide for adequate identification of the serum extract and its transportation to Hudson Health Center, where it will be stored under proper conditions. HEALTH EDUCATION AND WELLNESS

  1. Where can my student get information on health issues such as wellness, proper nutrition, weight management, stress management, alcohol and other substances, and sexual assault prevention?

    The Department of Health Education and Wellness is located on the second floor of Hudson Health Center. It offers a number of free health and wellness programs and services related to student health concerns. For more information, call 593-4742.

  2. Where can my student go for sexual health and gynecological information and services?

    A student can receive information on sexual health issues, a schedule for the sexual health seminar, and an annual gynecological exam through the Department of Health Education and Wellness, which is located on the second floor of the Hudson Health Center. COUNSELING AND PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES

  1. What does Counseling and Psychological Services provide and at what cost?

    A staff of licensed counselors and psychologists provide counseling and psychotherapy to students. Help is available if your daughter or son has a concern about her or his academic performance, career path, or personal problems such as unsatisfactory relationships, lack of confidence, test anxieties, depression, eating disorders, or substance abuse. There is no charge for counseling or psychotherapy, but there are limits on the number of sessions a student can have in a year. There is a charge for certain testing such as the Strong Interest Inventory and tests requested by students for employment and graduate-school admission purposes.   2. If a student seeks counseling services, does this information go on the student's permanent record?

    No, information about counseling and psychotherapy is confidential and protected by privileged communication laws of the state. No information is released to anyone, including parents, without the student's explicit consent.


CAREER SERVICES

  1. Where can my daughter or son get assistance in deciding on a major or career?

    The Office of Career Services, in Lindley Hall 185, offers a full range of career services to students and alumni. Career advisors provide individual assistance in helping students identify career options compatible with their interests, abilities, and values. Computerized career guidance programs and other assessment tools assist with this process. The office's Career Resource Library contains a wide variety of information on careers, summer jobs and internships, graduate schools, employers, and full-time job opportunities. There is no charge for any of the advising services in this office. For more information, call 593-2909.

  2. Can the university help my daughter or son get a job when she or he graduates?

    The Office of Career Services has several ways to assist graduating students with the job search process. Individualized advising, resume-writing and interviewing workshops, mock interviewing, and resume and cover-letter critiques help prepare students for the job search. Special services for graduating seniors include on-campus interviews, computerized resume referrals, and 24 hour job hotline. The Career Resource Library's job postings, newsletters, employer directories, and employer literature are valuable resources for the active job hunter. Career days and fairs provide the opportunity for students to make direct contact with a wide range of employers.


DEPARTMENT OF CAMPUS SAFETY (University Police)

The Department of Campus Safety provides safety service to the Ohio University community through three divisions:

  • Ohio University Police Department

    The Ohio University Police Department (OUPD) is a full-service police department with 28 commissioned officers, operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Students, staff, and guests should report any emergency or criminal activity to the OUPD and are encouraged to attend the numerous educational programs offered by the department in the residence halls and to student organizations.

  • Campus Escort Service and CATCAB

    The Campus Escort Service employs students who are trained and supervised by the Department of Campus Safety. Escorts are available for students, staff, and guests Sunday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m., and Friday and Saturday from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. (Winter quarter service starts at 7 p.m.) Escorts and information can be obtained by calling 593-4040 or 593-1911.

    The CATCAB service is designed to serve individuals with permanent or temporary disabilities and those who have other health problems that make crossing campus difficult. CATCAB accommodates individuals with wheelchairs, crutches or walking devices.

  • Parking Services

    First-year students are not permitted to have cars on campus due to the lack of parking space available. Parking Services manages assignment and enforcement of staff, student, and guest parking.   1. What is being done to prevent sexual assault on campus?

    The majority of sexual assaults are acquaintance, not stranger, rapes. An individual's risk is reduced with increased education and understanding. Programs that provide information regarding sexual assault and personal safety are sponsored by the Department of Health Education and Wellness and the Department of Campus Safety.

    The Ohio University Police Department offers a self-defense program for women entitle RAD (Rape Aggression Defense). For more information contact OUPD at 593-1911. Please encourage your son or daughter to attend these programs.

    Ohio University has a relatively low incidence of crimes, and we urge everyone to be safety conscious by taking advantage of the educational programming and escort service.   2. What measures can be taken by students to prevent theft on campus?

    Many thefts occur from unlocked student rooms. This is easily prevented by locking the room any time it is left unattended. Thefts also occur when belongings are left unattended at the library or in classrooms, or when bicycles are not secured with a lock and chain. The Department of Campus Safety manages Operation I.D., which provides identification stickers to register valuables such as computers and stereos. A variety of other programs are available to assist students with theft prevention on and off campus.


TELEPHONE SERVICES

  1. What is the cost of telephones in the residence hall rooms?

    There is no installation fee, security deposit, or monthly charge for telephones in the residence halls. Standard service includes touch-tone dialing and call waiting. Each room is equipped with a hanging wall telephone, which may be removed if the student would like to bring his/her own equipment. Cordless phones are not recommended, due to the potential for interference between rooms.   2. What options are available?

    Voice mail and second lines are available for a reasonable monthly charge. Information, pricing, and ordering can be found online at http://www.cns.ohiou.edu.

  3. How do students make long-distance calls?

    Students may make direct long-distance calls from their room with a Account Code. Calls made from on-campus using the Bobcat Account Code are charged a very competitive flat rate with no operator assistance charges or taxes. Students also may make collect calls or use other types of credit cards through the University's operator service. Public pay telephones are available on campus. Current Bobcat Account Code rates area available at http://www.cns.ohiou.edu.

  4. Can the Bobcat Account Code be used away from campus?

    Yes. Students can make long distance calls from Bobcat Off-Campus lines in Athens using the same dialing instructions as for on-campus. These calls are billed at the same low rates as call from on-campus. Students may also use their Bobcat Calling Card from anywhere in the continental United States via 1-800-777-OHIO. Calls using this 1-800 number are billed at slightly higher, but still competitive rates.

  5. How do students apply for a Bobcat Calling Card?

    The Bobcat Account Code is provided with a student's Ohio University identification card. A student may apply for the card at any time throughout the year at Communication Network Services, 154 HDL Center (first floor), W. Union Street, 593-1610.

  6. Can students receive collect calls?

    Students are not allowed to accept charges for a collect call. If a collect call is accepted, the call is billed to the student and will include an adminstrative fee. Such calls can be very expensive. Students are permitted to place outgoing collect calls.

  7. Can students use calling cards from an outside vendor?

    Students have the option of using calling cards from an outside vendor may make phone calls from their residence hall rooms. However, students should not use Ohio University telephone numbers to apply for such calling cards. Before signing up for a third-party calling card, we strongly encourage parents and students to check the sales literature for hidden charges, surcharges, monthly minimums, etc. In many cases, these deals, can be much more expensive than Ohio University's calling card.


COMPUTING FACILITIES

  1. Are computer labs available on campus?

    Ohio University provides 54 computer labs (19 open and 35 restricted) for students to use. These student labs contain more 680 Windows-compatible computers, 420 Macintosh computers, and 300 specialized workstations. Labs available to all students include the two operated by Computer Services: the Alden Instructional Support Lab (ISL), on the second floor of Alden Library, and the Computer Services Center ISL, on the ground floor of the computer center.

  2. Are computers available in the residence halls?

    Eash residence hall room comes equipped with at least one Gateway computer and laser-quality printer. Quads will have two computers and printers. Each PC comes pre-configured with Microsoft Office 2000 as well as E-mail and Internet tools.

  3. Does Ohio University provide Internet access and e-mail?

    Yes. All residence hall and lab computers have full Internet access. In addition to e-mail services, all students, faculty and satff have accounts on Oak, the University's e-mail server. Students can access their Oak e-mail using the pre-configured software copy of Mulberry on their residence hall computers as well as from computer labs and rapid-check e-mail stations located across campus, and from off-campus via the web. Students can activate and maintain their Oak accounts over the web at http://www.cns.ohiou.edu/email/. In addition to e-mail, Oak also allows students to create and publish personal web pages.
