Transferring Files
6. Windows PC with WS_FTP
- Start WS_FTP. If you have previously configured WS_FTP on this machine to transfer files to or from WWW.OHIOU.EDU, then skip to step 5.
- Before proceeding to transfer files for the first time on this machine, close the "Session Properties" dialog box by clicking the "X" in the upper-right corner.
- Follow the separate instructions to download the software and set the configuration.
- If you closed the "Session Properties" dialog box in step 2, then now is the time to re-open it by clicking on the "Connect" button on the left end of the toolbar, at the bottom of the WS_FTP window.
- In the "Session Properties" window, select the profile for the Front Door and verify that the host name is the IP address for the correct server, "WWW.OHIOU.EDU" (do not specify the host as "WWW.OHIO.EDU", because that is a different machine now, the CommonSpot server), and that the Host Type is "VMS UCX". Type in the appropriate User ID and password. Leave the directory field blank. Click on "OK".
- When the WS_FTP session window is displayed, maximize that window or use the mouse, dragging at the lower corner of the session window, to increase the space available for displaying file and directory names.
- Observe that the left side is the PC, the right side is the server, and on each side the top list is directories and the bottom list is files.
- Navigate with the mouse on the left side to get to the correct directory on your PC's disk drive:
- Double-click on a directory to enter that directory.
- Double-click on the ".." with the green arrow, at the top, to go up to the parent directory of the one currently being displayed.
- Double-click on a drive letter at the bottom of the list to change drives.
- The current disk and directory are identified above the directory list.
- Double-click on the server's WWW subdirectory. Then navigate from there if you have subdirectories, using the same method you used to navigate on your PC's disk drive, until you are looking at the corresponding directories on both sides of the WS_FTP session window.
- Move the mouse so that the pointer is over the boundary between the server's filename and date column headers. The mouse pointer will change to a double-sided arrow when it is directly over the boundary. Click and drag the boundary between the name and date columns to the right, so that you can see the entire filename. The first illustration shows the narrow filename column (with some of the names truncated), and highlights the location to drag:
- The second illustration shows the wider filename column, and highlights the "MkDir" button on the right side of the window, which you can use to create a new directory, if there is no directory on the server that matches the one on your PC's disk drive:
- If you already have files on the server in the directory you want to add the new file to, you will be able to confirm that you are in the correct directory by looking at the bottom of the right side and inspecting the list of existing filenames.
- Decide whether the file should be transferred in text or binary mode. Select the "ASCII" or the "Binary"radio button in the lower center of the WS_FTP session window, accordingly. If you have followed the configuration method of step 3, you can leave the mode set to "Auto," in most cases.
- Click once on the file to be transferred, and then once on the arrow in the middle of the session window that points in the direction the file is to move.
- When done transferring files, click on "Close" (at the lower left corner), and then exit from WS_FTP.
