Three employees receive 2002-03 Outstanding Administrator Awards

ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University presented three employees with 2002-03 Outstanding Administrator Awards on May 20 at an afternoon ceremony at Baker University Center. Marvin Bowman, director of educational telecommunications at the Ohio University Telecommunications Center; Sandra Foster, assistant director of student services at Ohio University-Lancaster; and Linda Lonsinger, director of employee and labor relations, were awarded a commemorative plaque and $1,000 for professional development.

First given in 1975, Outstanding Administrator Awards are presented annually to individuals who exemplify a strong commitment and distinguished service to Ohio University. Prior to being selected by the Administrative Senate's Outstanding Administrator Committee, recipients must be nominated by their peers.

Bowman, who will retire this summer after 27 years at Ohio University, was applauded for his creativity, organizational skills and expertise in media production since beginning his career at Ohio University in 1975. One of his most notable accomplishments was serving as executive producer of "Rural Communities: Legacy and Change," an award-winning series that was broadcast on PBS and the Annenberg Channel. Many of the television programs he has helped produce during his tenure have earned national recognition.

"I have been nominated a few other times for this award, so it was a surprise to me when I found out I won," Bowman said. "Anytime someone receives special recognition, they owe much of the credit to other people. I have had the honor of working with some very creative and productive people and I am grateful."

Foster, who began working at Ohio University in 1978, was singled out for her devoted service at Ohio University-Lancaster. She has overseen academic advising efforts while training faculty and staff on the SIS system, coordinated services for students with disabilities, administered the campus childcare facility and served as an adviser. She also implemented a Study Abroad Program, coordinated Lancaster Campus student participation in National Student Activities Conferences and oversaw the establishment of a licensed day care center. Foster has a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a master's degree in higher education from Ohio University.

"I was so honored and amazed when I was notified that I won the award," Foster said. "First of all, I was delighted that my colleagues nominated me. To actually win it is great because it lets you know that they respect and support you."

Lonsinger is being recognized for her diligent efforts as director of employee and labor relations for University Human Resources. She is credited for developing a positive and productive relationship between Ohio University and its employees. She negotiated processes between AFSCME Local 1699 and the Ohio University management team, using an interest-based bargaining approach and engendering an open and trust-based process. Colleagues and subordinates have praised her for demonstrating a genuine interest in their welfare and demonstrating an exemplary dedication to her position, office and the institution.

"I have taken time to think about this award since I was informed that I won it and realize that it is truly an honor," Lonsinger said. "There are so many dedicated and talented administrators at Ohio University - I never dreamed that I would win and was pleasantly surprised when I found out."

Twelve recent or soon-to-be retirees with more than 30 years of service along with administrators with 40, 35, 30, 25, 20, 15, 10 or five years of service also were honored at the ceremony.
