Symposium September 26 and 27, 2003 Writers from the tri-state region comment on the state of present-day Appalachia and Appalachian culture through poetry, short stories, novels and essays dealing with issues of gender, family, social experience, and heritage, which inform contemporary Appalachians and Appalachian culture. Keynote and featured writers include: Jayne Anne Phillips (author of MotherKind and Machine Dreams); Gail Adams (1988 Flannery OConnor Award for Short Fiction); Ann Pancake and Laura Treacy Bentley from West Virginia; Richard Hague, Jack Wright, and Larry Smith from Ohio.
