THE PURPOSE:
The purpose of the conference is to promote the critical study of Malcolm X as an intellectual, educator and critical social theorist through his educational philosophy and pedagogy.  It is hoped that this conference will assist in presenting Malcolm X’s philosophical influence not just in a social and political context, but in an educational context.

THE MISSION:
Malcolm X’s transforming leadership, educational philosophy, and “master teaching”(1) are fraught with meaning and possibility for people of African descent, and for oppressed people in general.  His legacy of social critique and analysis continues to be educationally instructive in rising above the imposition of cultural imperialism, domestically and internationally.  Additionally, the analyses will have significant implications regarding the leadership of people of African descent, the epistemology of African education and the “dilemma of achievement”(2) faced by students of African descent nationally and in the diaspora.

Specifically, this conference will:

  •    Create a public forum where people are exposed to the intellectual study of Malcolm X.
  •    Bring insight and understanding to the principles and pedagogy used by Malcolm X.
  •    Investigate the distortions about Malcolm X and his pedagogy.
  •    Examine Malcolm X’s ability to intellectually stimulate and inspire, which gave momentum to his pedagogical approach.
  •    Explore the relevance of Malcolm X’s leadership and vision for internationalism in the twenty-first century.
  •    Expose people of diverse backgrounds and communities to the transforming philosophy of Malcolm X.
