MINUTES

Minutes of the first meeting of the Organizing Board of the International Society for the Advancement of Respiratory Psychophysiology (ISARP) held at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, on 24 September 1993.

PRESENT: Ronald Ley and Beverly Timmons

APOLOGIES: Ashley Conway

AGREED:

1. To establish a new, international society for (a) the advancement of respiratory psychophysiology and (b) to formalize the series of symposia in this field which have been held for the past twelve years;

2. The name of the organization shall be the International Society for the Advancement of Respiratory Psychophysiology (ISARP);

3. RL shall serve as President for a one year term;

4. BT shall serve as Vice-President and Executive Director (unsalaried) for terms of one year;

5. Hans Folgering shall be invited to serve a one year term as Honorary Secretary;

6. The Board of Directors shall consist of the above three officers, a Treasurer/ Membership Secretary (to be appointed) and the Representatives (as below);

7. Representatives of ISARP shall be appointed in all countries where members reside; each representative shall serve for a one year term on the Board of Directors; and their other duties shall be described in guidelines to be written by BT;

8. The following shall be invited to serve as Representatives: Hans Folgering for The Netherlands; Jorge Gallego for France; BT for the UK; RL for the USA (temporarily until another person can be appointed);

9. BT shall draft the Bylaws for ISARP and submit these to the Board of Directors;

10. ISARP shall publish a newsletter at least once each year, beginning in 1994; Ashley Conway shall serve as Editor for a one year term;

11. An Annual Meeting of ISARP shall be held each year; the venues will be international in character in the tradition of locations of the past symposiums; guidelines for convening the meetings will be based on the original guidelines drawn up for Hans Folgering for the symposia by a professional conference organizer; the latter will be extended to include policies on format and content of the meetings (for example, to include a variety of presentations: oral, poster, invited lectures, etc) ; maintaining a balance of research and clinical aspects of this field is seen as particularly important (for example, there should be workshops on clinical and therapeutic approaches as well as on measurement, instrumentation, research methodology, etc).

12. An award for Distinguished Contribution to Respiratory Psychophysiology shall be presented at the Annual Meeting at the discretion of the Board of Directors; an award at the 1994 first Annual Meeting shall be given to Dr L C Lum;

13. BT will design letterhead, membership application forms, etc for the Society and will distribute them to the officers and Representatives;

14. Financial policies for the Society (for example, disbursement of any profit from registration fees for the Annual Meetings, workshops, etc) will be determined by the Board of Directors.
