MUS 322 - History and Literature of Music
Three Quarter Hours

PREREQUISITES: Music 321 or perm. This course is designed primarily for music majors or for those with substantial background in music theory.

COURSE OVERVIEW: The course surveys Western music of the Baroque and Classical periods (approx. 1600-1840). The course emphasizes musical analysis and listening skills, although representative styles and composers are placed in the context of their political, religious, and sociological environments.

METHODS OF COURSE INSTRUCTION: All material for this course is print-based. Instructor and students communicate and exchange materials through postal mail.

Students should have access to a good music dictionary or encyclopedia of music: such as Harvard Dictionary of Music, 1969 by Willi Apel, or the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, 20 volumes, 1980, by Stanley Sadie.

NUMBER OF LESSONS: The course has six lessons, including two supervised examinations. The four regular lessons are each divided into 4-6 sections.
TYPES OF WRITING ASSIGNMENTS: Self-study questions are included at the end of each section in a lesson. These may include identification of major concepts and/or people discussed in the section and study of representative scores and recordings. These questions are not submitted. At the end of each regular lesson is a submitted writing assignment covering all sections of the lesson. The assignments are similar to the format of the self-study assignments.
EXAMINATIONS: The two supervised examinations are similar to the writing assignments in format, with identification, analysis, and essay questions. Identifications also include naming composer and title of selections from a listening tape.

The final examination covers the entire course. Two hours is allowed for each examination, and students must have access to a cassette tape recorder for both examinations.
GRADING CRITERIA: The course grade is weighted on the following factors:

  Four lesson writing assignments
Midcourse examination
Final examination
40 percent
20 percent
40 percent

Students must obtain a passing grade (D or above) on the examinations to receive a passing grade for the course.
