MGT 491 - Seminar: Managing Yourself and Others in Organizations
Four Quarter Hours

PREREQUISITES: The course is intended for students at the junior or senior level in management or communication studies or those with work experience in organizations. Previous courses in management or workplace communications are recommended.

Students enrolled on any campus of Ohio University may not enroll in this course.

COURSE OVERVIEW: The course discusses the theory and practice of human relations in organizations and explores the skills and thinking that lead to becoming an effective manager. Issues that affect work behaviors in the rapidly changing work environment provide the background for student learning activities.

METHODS OF COURSE INSTRUCTION: All material for this course is print-based. Instructor and students communicate and exchange materials through postal mail.

E-PRINT OPTION
Students may use e-mail to submit lesson assignments, using any e-mail provider and any standard e-mail software. The assignments that are submitted electronically are printed and sent to the instructor by mail, not e-mail, so assignments may be sent as attached documents, thus preserving the original format. Graded assignments will be returned as printed copy by postal mail. Instructions for the e-print option are enclosed with the course guide.

NUMBER OF LESSONS: The course has fifteen lessons; there are no examinations.
TYPES OF WRITING ASSIGNMENTS: The course is writing-enriched, with substantial writing assignments in each lesson. These consist of essay responses to discussion questions, responses to articles, case study analyses, etc. Students are expected to produce assignments in professional workplace format (guidelines are provided in the course guide) with correct spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure.

GRADING CRITERIA: The final grade is determined by the average of grades for all lesson assignments (the course has no examinations) using the following scale:
