BUSINESS MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGY

BMT 110W - Introduction to Management

Prerequisites: None. This course is not open to students enrolled in the Ohio University College of Business.
 
Course Overview: The objective of this course is to give you a basic understanding of what makes an effective manager and an effective organization. The course focuses on the important functions of different levels of management and their role in organizational effectiveness.
 
Methods of Course Instruction: All material for this course is web-based. Instructor and students communicate through e-mail. All assignments are submitted through the course website.  Examinations cannot be taken by e-mail.

Technical Requirements: The following operating systems and browsers are fully tested and supported by Blackboard:

∙ Windows XP running Internet Explorer 6 or Firefox 1.0.x
∙ Macintosh OS 10.3 running Internet Explorer 5.2 or Safari 1.2

Other combinations of operating systems and browsers may be compatible with Blackboard 6.3. However, they have not been fully tested so you may experience problems.

 
Number of Lessons: The course consists of eight lessons, including a midcourse case study assignment and a supervised final examination.
 
Types of Writing Assignments: The course has nine lessons, including a midcourse case study assignment and a supervised final examination.
 

Examinations: Lesson 5 is an analysis assignment, which requires you to analyze material presented in the textbook and answer 10 questions about it. This is an unsupervised assignment with no time limit. More specific information about the assignment is provided in Lesson 5.

Lesson 9 is a supervised final examination. It consists of 100-multiple choice questions covering all the material in the course. The questions are similar to those in the lesson writing assignments. You will have two hours to complete the examination, which must be taken without books, notes, or other supplementary materials.

If you reside near an Ohio University campus, you must take your examination at the nearest campus. Others can arrange to have their examinations proctored at another accredited college or university or, if it is more convenient, at an accredited local high school. Ohio University reserves the right to reject a proposed examination supervisor. Detailed information about examination procedures will be included with your enrollment material. Examinations may not be taken online nor by e-mail.

 
Grading Criteria: All assignments are graded. The final grade is weighted as follows:

Final Examination

 =  50 percent
 =  20 percent
 =  30 percent
