The profession

With a Master of Health Administration degree from Ohio University, graduates join a distinguished group of alumni who have demonstrated skill and competence as managers and executives within a variety of health care settings and facilities. These leaders have learned important principles and acquired special abilities from the program that have provided a solid foundation for their career success including:

The program
The contemporary and rigorous curriculum of the Master of Health Administration (M.H.A.) program at Ohio University, delivered in a professional learning environment, prepares students for entry-level and mid-level management positions within the field of health services administration.

The full-time M.H.A., leading to a master's degree in health administration, is a 12-month, 60 quarter hour program after prerequisite work in statistics, management, and accounting. These prerequisites must be completed no later than the summer prior to enrollment.

Program mission statement
The mission of the Master of Health Administration (M.H.A.) program is to prepare individuals for leadership positions in contemporary health care organizations and systems. Graduates will obtain employment in a wide variety of facilities and settings including, but not limited to, hospitals, nursing homes, consulting firms, physician practices, health maintenance organizations, and health departments. These individuals will be highly valued due to their knowledge of the evolving health care environment, as well as their ability to apply this knowledge to solve complex problems, meet organizational goals, and improve the health status of individuals and populations within their specific domain or industry segment. The faculty are committed to promoting the professional and personal growth of these individuals through the development of teaching, research, and service activities in universities, health care organizations and associations, and community settings.
Program Requirements

The curriculum of the Master of Health Administration (M.H.A.) Program at Ohio University emphasizes administrative theory and function. The coursework is designed to provide insight into the concepts and practices upon which health administration is based.

The M.H.A. Program requires prerequisite introductory courses in statistics, management, and accounting. These courses must be completed with grades of "C" or higher from an accredited undergraduate institution. Students may apply to the program prior to completion of the prerequisites. Also, although not required, it is recommended that applicants have exposure to courses in communications, microeconomics, and information systems. The remainder of the program is sequenced as follows. A total of 60 hours is required for the M.H.A. degree.

*For students choosing the M.B.A./M.H.A. option, these courses are taken during the first year as part of the M.B.A. program.

Admission and Application

Admission to the M.H.A. program is competitive. While many students enroll in the program with a bachelor's degree in health administration, others come from a variety of undergraduate backgrounds.

To qualify for admission, you must have:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year institution (or an indication that the degree will be completed before you begin graduate study)
  • An overall grade-point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) for your last 90 quarter hours or 60 semester hours of study
  • A satisfactory score on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
  • Completed undergraduate prerequisites in statistics, management, and accounting, with grades of "C" or higher, no later than the summer before enrollment.

The following materials must be received before your application can be considered for admission:

  • An application (available at www.ohio.edu/graduate/apps.htm)
  • GMAT or GRE scores
  • Official transcripts from each post-secondary institution attended (You need not submit transcripts of coursework completed at Ohio University)
  • An essay identifying your career goals and objectives
  • A resume detailing your professional work experience
  • Three letters of recommendation from persons qualified to evaluate your capability for graduate study. Use the form found in the back of the Graduate Catalog or at www.ohio.edu/graduate/apps.htm
  • TOEFL scores (for international students).

Full-time students are admitted for fall quarter only. You must complete the application process by February 1. For more information on submitting an application contact the Office of Graduate Studies or the health administration graduate coordinator.

M.B.A./M.H.A. Option

Students have an option to complete requirements leading to dual degrees: Master of Business Administration and Master of Health Administration (M.B.A./M.H.A.). The option is a 24-month, 120-quarter hour program. Twelve of the 120 credit hours will satisfy the requirements of both the M.B.A. and the M.H.A. An additional 60 hours of M.B.A. core courses and 48 hours of M.H.A. courses complete the dual-degree program.

The dual-degree Master of Business Administration/Master of Health Administration (M.B.A./M.H.A.) option provides a solid basis in the concepts and practices upon which health administration is based, along with a business program that stresses producing a competent, ethics-oriented general manager with the appropriate skills and expertise to manage in a competitive global environment.

The full-time Master of Business Administation (M.B.A.) program is a lock-step 72 credit hour, four academic quarter program. It begins on September 1 and ends the following August. Students who are admitted to the M.B.A. program without an undergraduate background in business must begin in June with an intensive 10-week prerequisite program.

Financial Aid

The School of Health Sciences awards graduate assistantships and tuition scholarships to qualified students. An application for these types of aid is included in the graduate admissions application.
