We are pleased to offer you three options in health science graduate online education with convenience, flexibility, and affordability. For health care professionals or those who wish to move into the growing health care fields, those options are to:

  • Earn the Health Care Services Administration Certificate
  • Select only a class or two or three to gain specific knowledge in your area of specialization, or
  • Earn the Master of Health Administration degree by completing the certificate program and continuing on for additional course work.

The Health Care Services Administration Certificate Program is intended for health and health-related professionals who want the basic administrative and managerial knowledge that this comprehensive program can provide. The certificate program exposes the student to the competencies, knowledge and skills needed to function more effectively in a variety of administrative and managerial roles throughout health services organizations.

Certificate holders will be prepared to work collaboratively with professionals from a variety of disciplines to gain insights into rural and urban program administration and services in order to be able to work with both underserved and other population groups.

The curriculum will prepare baccalaureate and advanced degree graduates, clinical and allied health professionals and business degree graduates to administer programs and agencies that deliver health care and provide supportive leadership skills in a variety of health care services.

  • Apply the certificate credits toward the Master of Health Administration degree.
Curriculum Requirements
The certificate program requires a minimum of 27 quarter hours, consisting of six graduate courses and a practicum in the following:
  HLTH 601 Introduction to the Health Care Delivery System (4)
  HLTH 603 Administration of Health Care Organizations and Systems (4)
  HLTH 621 Health Care Finance (4)
  HLTH 630 Epidemiology in Health Planning (4)
  HLTH 638 Strategic Planning & Marketing for Health Services (4)
or HLTH 610 Program Evaluation and Assessment in Health Care (4)
  HLTH 628 Health Law (4)
or HLTH 608 Health Policy (4)
  HLTH 650 Practicum (3)
 
  • To be awarded the certificate you must complete the above courses with an overall g.p.a. of 3.0 and no grade in an individual course lower than a "C".
  • The three-quarter hour practicum will be a directed study in the area of the student's primary interest areas. It shall serve as a practical experience allowing the student to integrate and apply the knowledge base attained in a practice setting.
  • Completion of courses in basic statistics, accounting, economics, and management studies should be reflected on the undergraduate transcript. These are prerequisites for some of the courses in the certificate program. Exceptions to this may be permitted.
  • All credits MAY be applied toward a master's degree at Ohio University. Prospective applicants should be aware that individual colleges and programs determine degree requirements for graduate programs. Acceptance of credits into individual programs may vary.
  • Courses are all available using distributed learning technologies. All coursework is completed online whereever and whenever it is convenient for you following timelines provided. Advising and meetings with faculty members are held by phone, e-mail, video conferencing or personal contact.

Course Descriptions
HLTH 601 Introduction to the U.S. Health Care Delivery System
Overview and analysis of the U.S. health services system, including an in-depth examination of how the system is organized, how services are delivered, and the mechanisms by which health care services are financed.

HLTH 603 Administration of Health Organizations and Systems
Structure, organization, and function of contemporary health care delivery organizations and systems with emphasis on managerial concepts and issues such as control, communication, leadership, and decision making.

HLTH 608 Health Policy
Focuses upon the development of public policy in the health care arena. Integrates political institutions and levels of government in terms of health policy development and implementation.

HLTH 610 Program Evaluation and Assessment in Health Care
Introduces students to the activities of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting information so that they understand the program evaluation process. Includes a study of the resources needed to make assessments of and determine the need for, implementation of, and effectiveness/efficiency of intervention efforts in improving health care services.

HLTH 621 Health Care Finance
Explores financial administration processes within the various delivery systems and permits construction of the many financial reports.

HLTH 628 Health Law
Introduction to health care law. Examines the interface between the legal system and the health care delivery system. Considers the roles and rights of the key players in the U.S. health care system: patients, administration, governing boards, state and federal government, third-party payors, and health care providers.

HLTH 630 Epidemiology in Health Planning
Constructs rational basis for setting priorities and allocating scarce health care resources. Examines ways in which methodologically sound health statistics can be introduced into practical arena of planning health services. Covers natural history of disease, classification of disease, levels of prevention, measurement of morbidity and mortality, causal inference, sources of health care data, description of epidemiology, and application of epidemiology to disease and injury.

HLTH 638 Strategic Planning and Marketing for Health Services
Designed to give students an overview of the process of health services strategic planning and marketing. Explores community and health care program specific needs assessment, planning and marketing design, business scenarios, decision analysis, feasibility studies, implementation strategies and evaluation methods.

HLTH 650 Practicum
Supervised work experience in various aspects of administration and operation of health and health related programs.

HLTH 669C Chronic Disease Epidemiology - summer one option

Risk factors, extent, and modern public health approaches to prevention and control of major chronic diseases. Epidemiology of coronary heart disease, hypertension, stroke, cancer, chronic lung diseases, chronic neurologic disorders, and musculoskeletal diseases. Basic methods in chronic disease epidemiology. The public health burden of chronic disease.

Eligibility to Apply

Students are accepted into the program in two categories: those who have been admitted to an advanced degree program at Ohio University and those who possess a bachelor's or advanced degree but are not currently in a degree program at any institution.

If you are not currently seeking an advanced degree from Ohio University, you must meet the following requirements to be considered for unconditional admission to the graduate certificate program and its individual courses:

  1. Earned bachelor's degree or advanced degree from an accredited college or university.
  2. Minimum undergraduate grade-point average (g.p.a.) of 3.0 in a 4.0 scale in last 90 quarter hours or last 60 semester hours (undergraduates) or an earned graduate or professional degree.
  3. Satisfactory completion for undergraduate or graduate prerequisites in statistics, management, and accounting, which are prerequisities for some of the required courses. (Depending on individual circumstances, this requirement may be waived.)
Application

To apply for the program as a nondegree student, submit the following materials:

  1. Two copies of the application for graduate admission, indicating admission as a nondegree student in the Health Care Services Administration Certificate Program. Access the application at www.ohio.edu/graduate/
  2. Official transcripts from each post-secondary institution attended. (Transcripts of coursework completed at Ohio University do not need to be submitted).
  3. A cover letter with goals statement. Be sure to include your goals for graduate study and how your goals for study relate to what you are currently doing or your plans following graduation.
  4. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score from applicants whose native language is not English. The minimum score must be 575 on the written exam or 233 on the computer version for consideration.
  5. Certificate/nondegree application fee of $45. Check or money order only made out to Ohio University.

If you are currrently enrolled as a graduate student at Ohio University, obtain an Application for Update of Program(s) from Graduate Student Services, your dean's office, or the coordinator of the Health Care Services Administration Certificate program. After completing the application and obtaining your advisor's and the program coordinator's signature, turn the form in to Graduate Student Services, McKee House.

Submit your completed application, nondegree student application fee, TOEFL score, if applicable, transcripts, a cover letter with goal statement, and $45 application fee to

Timeline
Classes will be offered each year starting in January, March, June, and September.

Each quarter there will be at least two online classes offered. You will have the option of registering for one or both of the classes offered. Each class will be repeated during the year at least once allowing flexibility in scheduling. Set your own pace to meet your individual needs.

It will be possible for you to earn the certificate within four quarters of study if you register each quarter for the maximum of two classes offered.

Fees
Tuition and fees per credit hour total $387 for Ohio residents and $718 for non-Ohio residents for the 2007-08 year. Charges are billed each quarter you are registered and prices are subject to change.
