Safety & Risk Management includes the departments of Environmental Health & Safety, Worker's Compensation, Insurance and the Ohio University Police Department.

We exist to assure as much as possible that the University will not be prevented from pursuing and achieving its vision and goals as a result of losses to its people or other assets.

Safety is first in our name. Because poor safety wastes resources and is ethically unacceptable, minimizing incidents through risk control is our first preference. Incidents that do occur require that we plan for the availability of funds for resulting losses. This planning includes risk retention and risk transfer or insurance.

These are not small tasks. Achieving safety and managing risk require broad cooperative efforts. Challenges arise because people perceive or assess risks in different ways at different times. Some people do not realize that safety is everyone's responsibility.

For these reasons Safety & Risk Management maintains its focus on situations or issues of fact, creates constructive relationships, continuously undertakes improvement initiatives and leads safety efforts by example. This is our commitment.
