What is it?

It is widely recognized that for a majority of today's couples, both partners desire employment. When recruiting faculty or staff for Ohio University, it has become increasingly important to consider the employment needs of the partner as well as those of the recruit.

In response to this need, Ohio University initiated the Dual Career Network in September of 1998. This program is designed to help the recruit's partner in networking and locating employment opportunities in the Athens area.

While employment is not guaranteed, the Dual Career Network will do everything possible to contribute to the successful recruitment of dual-career couples.

Eligibility Guidelines:

  • You must be a spouse or benefits-eligible partner of an Ohio University faculty or staff member.
  • You must be part of a recruitment effort or have lived in the area for less than two years.
  • You must not be currently working with a private employment agency.
  • You must be willing to look at career opportunities in the surrounding communities as well as at Ohio University.
Important Information:
  • This will be a service provided by Ohio University.
  • Only spouses of university faculty and staff may use the Dual Career Network. Services are not available at this time to students, residents or fellows.
  • The Network does not serve as an employment agency and cannot guarantee employment.
  • The program cannot ask for preferential treatment in the hiring process.
  • The program will not interfere with normal hiring procedures.

  • The program cannot address issues of marriage counseling, housing, child care or moving arrangements.
Services Provided
  • Job search and networking assistance for up to one year.
  • Access to job postings from within the University as well as from universities, colleges, and other employers in the surrounding areas.
  • Resume writing assistance.
  • Guidance to appropriate resources for career exploration and planning.
  • Assistance with interviewing techniques.
  • Letters of support written for jobs within the University.

  • Current data on how best to find job openings.
How Will the Program Help Recruitment?
  • When couples are provided with up-to-date information about local employment opportunities, they tend to have more confidence in making a decision to come to Ohio University.
  • For couples trying to make the difficult decision of whether or not to relocate, it is helpful to know that someone at the university is working with them to ensure a smooth transition.
  • The Dual Career Network will receive all faculty, professional and classified job postings from within the university, as well as job postings from a large number of area university/colleges and other employers within a 60-mile radius.

  • The coordinator will make a concerted effort to remain aware of employment opportunities available in the area. This goal will be met by staying in contact with employers and by attending local business and Chamber of Commerce meetings.
