Corporate Partners

EBI's reputation for delivering value attracts many different partners, from innovative small companies to globally recognized giants. Our corporate partners are significant to our success, providing over half of EBI's total funding -- a much greater percentage than that of most major research institutes.

Our relationships over time include:

  • Biotechnology companies
    - Diagnostic Hybrids
    - Phyton Biotech
    - CellPro
    - Elixir Pharmaceuticals

  • Pharmaceutical companies
    - Abbott Laboratories
    - Pfizer
    - Procter & Gamble
    - Merck

  • General business development
    - Battelle Memorial Institute
    - Adena Ventures
    - Appalachian Regional Entrepreneurship Initiative

Other corporate partners are our spin-off companies. Eight companies have been created through licensing of EBI "platform" technology. Six of these companies still exist, a testament to the value of our technologies.

EBI enhances the university's efforts to equip students for careers in modern biomedical research and business by involving them in the life of the institute in all its interdisciplinary and entrepreneurial complexity. Industry leaders value the skills and perspective of EBI's staff and students. This is one reason why students from our labs have been hired by companies like Bristol Myers-Squibb and Human Genome Sciences, while others have entered academic positions or medical schools.

We also have been able to attract talented professionals. Opportunities at EBI and with our start-up companies have convinced individuals to join us from:

  • Genentech
  • Monsanto
  • Merck
  • Hoffmann-La Roche
  • Novo Nordisk
  • Pharmacia
  • Schering-Plough

Executives from our companies have gone on to success in major enterprises and startups, as well (e.g., Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Tercica, VistaGen Therapeutics, Bay City Capital and the Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse).
