An Alternative to Full-Time Classes
If you are an adult student who is balancing work and family while still trying to find time to go to school, the Institutes for Adult Learners may be the program for you! The Institutes offer adults the opportunity to come to campus for one, two, or three weeks and complete 4 to 12 quarter hours during that time. Each year we choose faculty and courses that we believe will stimulate and encourage adult students to learn more about relevant issues and topics. Courses generally offered during the Institutes typically yield upper division credit.
Students may choose one course per session. Students prepare for courses before arriving on campus, attend class several hours each day, and then prepare a project or other work as required after they return home. Housing is available on campus, and classes are held in Ohio University classrooms. Everyone in the class is an adult student, and many friendships are formed during the week of study. Students and faculty agree that it is a great way to learn.
Currently, Adult Learning Services offers the Institutes for Adult Learners three times a year: Winter, Spring, and Summer. For more information about dates and course offerings, please contact the External Student Program.
Who can attend the Institutes for Adult Learners?
Any student who is currently active in the External Student Program may enroll in the Institutes on a first-come first-serve basis. Students will receive Institute information, including a registration form, in the mail.
Registration
To register for an Institute, complete our registration form and return it to Adult Learning Services. A preregistration fee of $200, which will be applied toward tuition, is required.
After your preregistration fee is received, you will be sent information on course schedules, preliminary reading or course assignments, book costs, and textbook acquisition.
Tuition Costs
Ohio residents and nonresidents both will be charged $125 per quarter hour for courses offered on the main (Athens) campus.
One four-hour course will cost $500.
(Please note that fees are subject to change without notice.)
Activities
As a student in the Institute for Adult Learners, you will be considered a resident student during your stay at Ohio University. This status will allow you to use university facilities at little or no charge. These facilities include the library, computer labs, student center, aquatic center, basketball and tennis courts, and a golf course.
Swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, and other activities are available in the surrounding area. Brochures and additional information concerning these activities will be sent to you upon registration.
