The Office of Adult Learning Services provides services and develops programs to meet the particular needs of adult learners, including academic advising, links to other Ohio University resources, the External Student Program, Institutes for Adult Learners, and the Experiential Learning Program.
If you are interested in a degree program but cannot study full time on campus, the External Student Program provides help in evaluating your previous college-level work and planning your program. It also helps you coordinate the best combination of Independent Study and classroom course options to earn an associate's o r bachelor's degree.
The Summer and Winter Institutes for Adult Learners provide an opportunity for adult students to come to the Ohio University campus for one to three weeks of intensive study. This award-winning program gives you another opportunity to earn college credit and interact with other adults who are pursuing degrees.
The Experiential Learning Program helps qualified adults document and receive college credit for learning that occurred through work or volunteer activities. Up to one year of college credit may be earned toward a four-year degree. The Life and Career Experiences Analysis course, which focuses on development of the learning portfol io, is offered every year on the Athens campus as well as Ohio University's regional campuses and is required for submission of a learning portfolio.
College Program for the Incarcerated
Since 1974, Ohio University's College Program for the Incarcerated has provided an opportunity for incarcerated students to work for college credit and degrees by correspondence. CPI makes available to incarcerated students the same services offered to students "on the street" by our sister program, the External Student Program. These services include academic advising, degree planning, and linkage to other University offices and personnel.
