OHIO UNIVERSITY RANKED AS ONE OF AMERICA'S 100 BEST COLLEGE BUYS

ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University has been included in the "America's 100 Best College Buys" report for the fourth year in a row. The report recognizes public and private institutions that provide superior cost-efficient education. Ohio University was the only public university in Ohio mentioned in this year's directory.

"Ohio University serves as an excellent example of how to run any college or university in the country, public or private," said Lewis T. Lindsey, Jr., president of Institutional Research and Evaluation which compiled the directory.

Institutional Research & Evaluation maintains active files on 1,537 accredited, four-year colleges and universities, 51 of which are in Ohio.

"It is gratifying to have an outside source recognize the quality of education that Ohio University continues to offer its students," Ohio University President Robert Glidden said. "America's 100 Best College Buys looks at a variety of factors, including test scores, academic ability, level of tuition and fees, and scholarships, so this recognition is a tribute to both students and faculty."

To be considered for the directory, an accredited four-year institution had to:

  • Offer full residential facilities, including halls and dining services
  • Offer opportunities for need-, academic-, and athletic scholarships
  • Have an entering first-year class in the fall of 1998 with grade point and SAT/ACT scores equal to or above the national average.
  • Have an out-of-state cost of attendance that was either below the national average or not more than ten percent above it.

Entering first-year students at Ohio University fall quarter had average SAT scores of 1116. The national average was 1070. Freshmen averaged 24 on the ACT compared to a national average of 22.

"A college or university does not have to be expensive to be good," Lindsey said. "Prospective college students and their parents should not think that to get a quality education, they must pay a high cost," Lindsey said. "Ohio University has a very consistent history of providing students a superior education at the lowest possible cost."
