Fees, tuition, and fellowships

Tuition and program fees are $2,200. Program participants are responsible for their own transportation, health insurance (required) and appropriate pre-travel innoculations, visa application expenses (approximately $75), books and living expenses. Citizens or nationals of the United States, as well as permanent residents of the United States, may apply for fellowships providing a per diem allowance under the Fulbright-Hays Group Study Abroad Program. The United States Department of Education stipulates, however, that no one person may be a funded fellow in any Fulbright-Hays group study program (or seminar abroad program) more than once in any given three-year period, nor ever be funded for more than two such programs. Applicants not eligible for Fulbright-Hays fellowships may contact the COTIM president to inquire about other possible funding sources. To apply for funding under the Fulbright-Hays program, applicants need only to so indicate on item 14 of the application form. There are no special forms to fill out. Although the precise amount of the fellowships cannot be determined at this time, it is anticipated that COTIM will be able to offer a limited number of fellowships adequate to offset a large proportion -- but not all -- of the costs of this program. Applicants are encouraged, however, to seek funding from other sources to either fully support or supplement the cost of study in the COTIM-UNSRAT program. A select number of US universities offer summer FLAS (Foreign Language Area Study) fellowships funded by the US Department of Education. Although by a nation-wide agreement those FLAS fellowships offered through centers for Southeast Asian studies can only be used in the SEASSI (Southeast Asian Area Studies Summer Institute) program, FLAS fellowships offered by international studies centers usually do not have that restriction. Check with the international studies program at your institution to see whether such unrestricted FLAS fellowships are available.
